#KPI Headlines:

  • From last week’s #KPI blog, an in-depth look at college basketball scheduling to supplement the look at college football scheduling last fall.
  • The current #KPI cut line to make the NCAA Tournament is No. 52 while the current cut line for the NIT is No. 89.  The NIT cut line will become higher as regular season champions who lose their conference tournaments become automatic qualifiers to the NIT.
  • The top seven teams in the #KPI are from seven different conferences.
  • Top increases in #KPI from non-conference to conference (among teams in the at-large #KPI field only): 1-Michigan (+72); 2-Saint Joseph’s (+56); 3-California (+55); 4-Virginia (+51); 5-Richmond (+44)
  • Top decreases in #KPI from non-conference to conference (among teams in the at-large #KPI field only): 1-Oregon (-124); 2-Oklahoma State (-91); 3-Baylor (-87); 4-Missouri (-60); 5-Massachusetts (-56)
  • There are some discrepancies as to who is eligible and who is not eligible for the SWAC Tournament (and hence their at-large bid).  I currently have Alabama State as the team with the best record among those likely eligible.
  • Outside the top-10 #KPI conferences, keep an eye on the Missouri Valley (if Wichita State loses in the conference tournament) and MAC as possible bid stealers.
  • Points are up 2.83 PPG this past week (Feb 10-16) compared to the same week last year.
  • Road Warriors: Stephen F. Austin leads all teams with 12 true road wins. Manhattan (11-3), Wichita State (10-0) and North Dakota State (10-5) all have double-digit road wins.  Saint Louis, Boston U., Indiana State and Morehead State have nine road wins apiece.
  • Rule Change Effects Different By Conference: There is a large margin between the highest and lowest conferences in some key rule change statistics.  The MAAC (25.2 FTA/G) leads all conferences in FTAs in conference games while the Patriot League attempts only 18.1 FTA/G, a difference of 7.1 free throw attempts per team, per game.  Games in the Summit League average 17.2 fouls per game, per team (the fewest) while the MAAC averages 21.0 PFs/G (the most), a difference of 3.8 fouls per game.  The MAAC averages the most possessions (70.1 per game) while the ACC (62.7 possessions per game) averages the fewest.
  • Close Games: In conference play, the American (14.5 PPG), America East (13.1 PPG), Conference USA (12.0 PPG) and Big East (11.5 PPG) have the highest margin per game.  The closest games have been played in the Northeast (8.7 PPG), Colonial (8.9 PPG), MAC (9.0 PPG), Big South (9.3 PPG) and Mountain West (9.4 PPG).
  • Winning Percentage in Conference Home Games (by conference): 1-Big Sky (55-21, .724); 2-SEC (60-24, .714); 3-Ivy (22-9, .710); 4-Missouri Valley (48-22, .686); 5-Pac-12 (50-23, .685); 6-SWAC (39-20, .661); 7-Atlantic Sun (46-25, .648); 8-Big 12 (39-22, .639); 9-Conference USA (56-32, .636); 10-Atlantic 10 (43-26, .623); 11-MAAC (54-34, .614); t12-Southland (55-35, .611); t12-WCC (44-28, .611); t12-Colonial (33-21, .611); 15-America East (34-22, .607); 16-Southern (40-26, .606)
  • Winning Percentage in Conference Road Games (by conference): 1-WAC (24-26, .480); 2-Big South (34-37, .479); 3-Sun Belt (29-32, .475); 4-Big Ten (34-42, .447); 5-Big West (21-27, .438); 6-MAC (31-41, .431); t7-Patriot (30-40, .429); t7-Horizon (24-32, .429); t7-Northeast (24-32, .429); t7-Summit (18-24, .429); 11-ACC (39-53, .424); 12-American (26-36, .419); 13-Big East (26-37, .413); 14-Mountain West (28-41, .406); 15-MEAC (29-43, .403); 16-Ohio Valley (30-46, .395)
  • If the #KPI did not adjust for home/road/neutral sites, the #KPI top-10 would be: 1-Syracuse; 2-Arizona; 3-Kansas; 4-Wisconsin; 5-Florida; 6-Villanova; 7-Creighton; 8-Wichita State; 9-Duke; 10-Ohio State.
